Georgi Duhtev was twenty-five when the municipality hired him in 1910 to turn a swamp between the town and the shore into a park. He planted exotics from every continent and left behind something closer to a forest than a garden: 600 decares of shade, sculpture, gravel and sea air, protected as a monument of landscape architecture.
In contest week the garden becomes the city's green room. The Sea Casino, the Summer Theatre, the pier and its lighthouse sit inside it, and the walk from the arena to the beach passes through the middle of it. Bring a jacket: the wind off the bay in May is real.
